Today, Congressman Brian Jack released the following statement on the bipartisan passage of the Laken Riley Act:

“The first bill I co-sponsored in Congress was the Laken Riley Act (H.R. 29), and I am so proud it was the first bill to pass the House of Representatives this Congress, doing so with significant bipartisan support.”

“During my campaign, I promised to strengthen law enforcement’s ability to secure our border.”

“The Laken Riley Act will protect Georgians by requiring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to immediately detain and remove illegal aliens who commit theft offenses.”

“I commend my colleague, Congressman Mike Collins, for leading this legislation.  May justice be served for Laken Riley.”

Background:

  • Laken Riley was a 22-year-old nursing student who was brutally murdered by an illegal alien while running on the campus of the University of Georgia on February 22, 2024.
  • The Laken Riley Act would amend federal law to require Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest illegal aliens who commit theft offenses and mandates that these illegal aliens are detained until they are removed from the country.
  • The Laken Riley Act ensures that states have standing to bring civil actions against federal officials who refuse to enforce immigration law or violate the law to the detriment of Americans.
